AFC Urmston Meadowside

Won

4 - 0

Callaghan (2), Chatterton, Connor

This was another chance for some revenge, having lost the away league game and been knocked out of the cup by Meadowside.

A full squad (less Kyle) turned up and started the game very brightly, winning possesion well and then trying (and frequently succeeding) to keep the ball with neat passes on the floor. The first goal came after a slick move saw the ball switch from the right through the centre to Stephen on the left. He pulled the ball back to Louis whose shot hit the target but was initially saved by the keeper who pushed the ball high in the air. Unfortunately for him, the strong wind then blew the ball over his head and into the net.

Tails up, the home team continued to play with confidence and were causing AFC all sorts of problems. In defence St.John's were passing their way up the pitch rather than just clearing their lines. The second goal saw an AFC attack break down with Kadeem passing back to the keeper and receiving a return pass. Four passes later the ball was in the net courtesy of James Chatterton on an overlapping run from left back.

Louis picked up his second with a neat finish in off the right post from a one-on-one to leave the score 3-0 at half time. Martin was almost purring through his half time talk.

The second half wasn't quite as dominant for the hoops, but there was never any of the normal jitters. Paul Connor scored his first of the season with a header from one of James Hughes perfectly delivered corners very soon after the restart and from there on St.John's were on cruise control. Any chances AFC created were dealt with effectively by the defence (including two excellent sliding tackles from Kadeem). Chris Mackie had one of his best days in goal, and a clean sheet was no fluke.

Altrincham Juniors

Won

2 - 1

Callaghan (2)

The first fixture against Altrincham Juniors stands out as St.John's best of the season (winning 3-5) and as is the way of football players, the team were looking forward to the rematch. AJ have had a better season than St.J's, with only the one loss.

The home team started well with a goal coming early after a defensive mix up saw the ball fall to Louis, who finished well from outside of the box. The team was missing Stephen on the left (on holiday) so had been rearranged. Also absent were Sam (holiday) and manager Martin (unspecified, though did put up one net before disappearing!!). AJ equallised mid way through the first half when a speculative shot looped over the diminutive St.John's keeper. Deja vue, n'est ce pas?

St.John's reponded well and took the lead again before half time through Louis. There were several more chances in the first half including two that fell to Louis - both flying narrowly wide of the post - that would have secured the game. As it was, at half time the score remained 2-1 to the home team.

The second half saw AJ get into the game more and make several good chances. However the home defence played well and usually managed a challenge or block that kept the ball out of the net. Although the home teams crossbar was hit in each half and Chris Mackie made a few good saves, there were also chances made at the other end and the final score felt about right (to us).

Callaghan

This was a hard fought game. St.John's had won the early season fixture convincingly and perhaps were slightly complacent at the start of the game. As a result Ashton had the best of the first half but St.John's defence were playing well. When Ashton did score it was somewhat fortuitous, coming from a headed OG by Paul Connor. Gradually the visitors began to assert themselves and in the second half had the best of the play and chances. Louis equalised with a well taken strike that curled in of the right hand post. Several good chances went begging to win the game (for both teams) so in the end the points were shared.

Sale Utd

Won

8 - 5

Schall(3), Callaghan (3), Stafford-Leape, Dunne

This game was played in much better conditions than the previous week, and the standard of play was much better as a consequence.

St.John's were missing their regular keeper Chris Mackie so Sam Harper deputised. He has become the ultimate utility player!!

It wasn't long before St.John's were pressurising the Sale defence, and Justin opened the scoring with a poachers goal. Chances were coming at regular intervals for St.Johns and Sale had to thank their keeper for several saves. St.John's had to wait for a spectacular strike from the left wing by Louis that flew over the keepers head to get the two goal lead that makes the team relax. In fact they relaxed too much and Sale pulled a goal back almost immediately. Louis and Justin both scored again before the interval, Louis' second being another spectacular effort, this time an acrobatic overhead kick from a flick-on by Justin off Calum's long throw. (Possibly our first goal from a move practised in training).

Half time was more buoyant than usual, as we don't normally have the luxury of a lead! The team were urged to keep playing their succesfull passing game to make sure that more goals were scored, as one of our failings this season has been to relax once we have a lead and let the opposition back into the game.

The second half played out in similar fashion to the first and St.John's created chance after chance. Justin and Louis completed their hat-tricks and Stephen and Tyler bagged a goal each. Sale did score four more, but they were late on and St.John's never lost control. Three points well won.

Sale Utd

Sale Utd were bottom of the table, and St.John's all knew it. But in a very strong wind the first half saw Sale go  into the break 2-0 up, scoring two well taken breakaway goals. The wind was behind St.John's, but what should have been an advantage actually proved difficult to overcome, with the ball constantly running of the end of the pitch. Probably influenced by calls from the touchline to shoot from just about anywhere, the team only got to grips with the necessary tactics (ball on the floor) with time in the half running out.

Fortunately, they played the second half with plenty of belief and scored three goals int the wind to rescue the (precious) points. A strong run from Justin for the first goal was follwed by a headed goal by Louis from a Justin cross. Justin scored the winner following a good move down the left by Louis and Stephen, that degenerated into slapstick with Paul (playing the second half at centre forward) and the keeper collapsing on the floor and Justin arriving at the far post to prod home.

The win would have been more comfortable with some better finishing - there were several open goals and one-on-ones that were fluffed (again Justin and Louis to the fore). However with plenty of chances been made the team felt pretty happy as they set off home and no doubt are lookiing forward to the return fixture next Sunday.

This was another close run match where St.John's were unlucky to come away without any rewards.

Paul Connor was injured so Sam Harper played alongside Kadeem in Central Defence (just a week after starring at centre forward!!) and performed very well indeed.

There was also a strong first half from Mohamed at right midfield (covering for a shinpadless Justin). Halftime saw the team 0-1 down (the goal was due to "static" defending) but otherwise hopeful as they were causing plenty of problems to the opposition.

This continued in the second half, but WP scored twice more, both goals coming from their left back Arnold hitting speculative long range shots that flew over Chris in goal. Clearly we need to close down quicker if we play them again this season.

Time was beginning to run out by the time St.John's got their reward for persistence and creative play, Justin finishing (in borrowed shinpads) a good move down the left. The goal had the feeling of a consolation, but was follwed by a fine shot from James Hughes that flew in just ubder the bar, setting up an exciting last five minutes. If they had taken their chances a bit more cooly, St.John's may have got some points from the game.

Urmston Town

4 - 2

Harper (3), Callaghan

After a whole month of losses it was very important for the team to get something from this game. Only Kyle and Caelan were missing so the team was as strong as could be hoped.

In order to try and put aside the various wobbles and anxieties seen in the previous matches the team lined up in traditional 4 4 2 with instuctions to enjoy the game and support each other.

The first half saw a strong performance, with St.John's on top. Despite this they went behind twice. However, unlike previous games, the team did not panic and were able to score equalisers to turn around at half time with the score 2 - 2. Both goals were scored by Sam Harper with cool finishing from around the 6 yard box.

The second half continued in the same vein, with both teams enjoying plenty of pressure and chances. However St.John's did have the edge and went ahead mid way through the half with Sam completing a well deserved hat-trick. More chances at either end followed before Louis was able to make the game safe with ten minutes to go. In truth both teams deserved to score more goals, but the end result was fair.

James Chatterton playing at left back got special mention in the the managers victory speech but was pipped to a one of "man-of-the-match" award by the hat-trick hero.

A closely fought game, but one that was never under St.John's control. Although they started well and made a couple of good chances in the opening 15 minutes, thereafter their play lost confidence. UM scored midway through the first half and again before the interval and half time couldn't come soon enough.

The  poor form continued in the second half for St.John's. UM scored again to make it 3 - 0 with 20 minutes to go. It was only then that the effort and fighting spirit appeared. Paul Connor was let loose up font to try and shake things up, and it did cause St.John's to stir. Dillon Clarke put in a fine cross for Louis to score a consolation, but it all proved too little too late.

Schall (2), Stafford-Leape, Callaghan

This was another difficult game for St.John's. Callum (Holiday) and Kadeem (ill) were both absent so that new back line was needed. As has happened before, more than one change to the line up proved too difficult for the team to cope with. To compound the difficulties, the pitch at Deans had a considerable gradient from one end to the other and a strong wind blew thoughout the game, downhill!! Naturally enough St.John's found themselves playing uphill into the wind in the first half.

The team lined up in a 3-5-2 formation, with the centre midfield supposed to cover the additional defensive duties required with Kadeems absence. As events proved, this was rather optimistic, and with ten minutes to half time Deans led by 4 - 0. To their credit St.John's kept trying to play a passing game, but were undone by the high wind, sloping pitch, muddy pitch that hindered passing and a strong Deans team who were very quick to get forward as soon as they won possession.

Having gone four down, St.John's fought back to score twice before half time - both excellent goals from Justin. As a result, half time saw the team view the second half with opimism, as they would have conditions in their favour. Unfortunately, as has happened before, the result was a less than impressive half, with too many misplaced passes to allow enough consistent pressure on the Deans goal. Although Stephen did score early in the half to bring the score to 4-3, the St.John's immediately relaxed and allowed Deans to get a goal back from the restart. Although they kept playing, it was without enough conviction and the match finished 8-4.

A better performance than the previous week, but not good enough.

This was the first game of the new year and we can be confident that we will improve in the coming months, as this will surely be the worst performance of 2008.  It is difficult to imagine anything worse!!

The extended break took its toll on St.Johns passing game and reduced the team to kick and run for most of the game. There were a few spells where they managed to play a series of passes without losing the ball, and it was at these times that we managed to score.  For all that, with better finishing St.John's could still have won as numerous chances were fluffed. However the result was fair to Urmston Town who were able to take advantage of some basic defensive mistakes and St.Johns have to wait for the return fixture to win back some respectability.

Wilmslow Sports

Won

6 - 4

Callaghan, Schall (3), Stafford-Leape, Hughes

Following two postponed matches (due to rain) the team were eager to play a game. Wilmslow Sports are bottom of the table, and the away fixture saw St.John's pick up three points without playing very well.

Manager Martin Connor had caught the wrong plane back from Ireland, and so was forced to have a miserable time in Edinburgh instead of dutifully watch his team. Team talks and tactics fell to his sidekick, Des Callaghan, who did a quite brilliant job.

Only Kyle (stitches) and Mohamed (no excuse) were missing, and St.John's lined up in familiar fashion. Sam and James Chatterton had to wait on the bench for their turn to play.

The first half saw St.John's play very well for twenty minutes to take a 3-0 lead. A header from Louis and two from Justin (including an excellent long range shot made the game comfortable, at which point the team "took the foot of the gas".

The start of second half saw the team raise their game again, and Stephen Justin and James Hughes all found the net. In truth more goals should have been scored, with Tyler and Dillon both having several efforts go close. At 6-0 "contented" replaced "hungry" on their faces and concentration disappeared. Wilmslow score four times in the final fifteen minutes. Although credit should go to Wilmslow for continuing to try right to the end, St.Johns must look at themselves and try to ensure they keep playing hard all the way through the game.

St.John's are not good at back to back fixtures. This game represented three more dropped points where it should have been three points won. The same thing happened last year when we shared six points evenly with Sale Utd who eventually finished bottom of the table.

The day started poorly with James Hughes too ill to play. He has become very important to us in midfield and his absence is difficult to cover. To compound the problem Kadeem overslept and only arrived 20 minutes after kickoff. The necessary reshuffle robbed the team of a chance to start strongly, and the whole first half was spent trying to stay in touch. Half time arrive with the score 0-1, and a big effort was needed to get back in the game.

Sure enough, St.John's did switch on and it is hard to believe they did not level or go ahead given the number of chances created. Unfortunately chances kept been squandered and Unicorn were 0-2 up before Stephen found the back of the net. With St.John's pushing forward at every opportunity to equalise, it was not surprising that they conceded a third instead.

Looking back to last weeks report, it is clear that last weeks lessons were not learnt!!

Unicorn Athletic

2 - 3

Callaghan (2), Schall

Following on from the previous weeks disappointment, winning this match was crucial in re-establishing the team's efforts toward promotion. As we have already dropped 12 points, it is probable that we will need to win all our remaining league fixtures to go up.

Unicorn always give us a difficult game. Last year they knocked us out of the cup, and this game proved just as competitive. The first half was shaded by St.Johns, with stronger performances all around the pitch. James and Dillon gained a firm grip on the important midfield area, and the visitors were constantly threatening to open the scoring. Before it happened, James Hughes took a Unicorn clearance full in the face and had to recuperate on the side lines. St.John's adjusted with Louis dropping to midfied with Dillon and James Chatterton joining Tyler for a spell up front. The enforced changes worked, but some of the early attacking momentum was lost.

With about fifteen minutes to half time, James was able to return to the fray. The opening goal finally came with a stylish move, the ball moving from the left wing back to Kadeem, to Justin on the right touch line, on to Tyler who crossed into Louis' path for a first time finish into the corner of the goal.

Mohamad took his turn on the pitch, replacing Tyler ten minutes before half time, and the game continued with the majority of chances being created by the visitors.

The score remained 0-1 at half time. With the restart, play continued in the same mould, but with chances still being spurned by St.Johns. Eventually Justin finished one of many overlaps down the right. 2-0 felt more comfortable, and half way through the half Louis got his second, collecting one of the many poor Unicorn goal kicks and clinically finishing. (In truth we should have taken greater advantage of the opposition goal kicks, as we won possession from most of them within five yards of the penalty area).

It was at this point that St.John's had their traditional Sunday Siesta (cold though it was) and allowed Unicorn to score twice in the final quarter of an hour. Luckily we held out, but not without some close run chances. Several good saves from Chris Mackie and goal line clearances kept the three points safe, but two lessons were clear - take chances to score when we make them and take the first opportunity to clear when in defence!!

The next game is against the same opposition, at Turn Moss, so we will have a chance to assess if the lessons are learnt.

Woodhouse Park

Lost

0 - 2

Woodhouse Park need no introductions to any of the St.John's Under 13s, being the best opposition we have regularly played for some time. They have enjoyed an unbeaten start to the season, so have clearly continued from the last season when they narrowly missed promotion. The last game between the teams was the Sylvan Cup final that St.John's won, so WP probably had revenge on their minds.

The first goal in these encounters is frequently critical, and within the first five minutes St.John's conceded. A period of pressure in our own half allowed a through ball to their left wing who finished very well.

The score remained 0-1 until the last ten minutes when WP took advantage of some optimistic passing between St.John's defenders trying to play their way out of trouble.

Although the game was lost, it was a close run thing, with St.John's making but not taking plenty of chances. Justin went especially close (against the bar) after the score was 0-2. However WP were also creating and missing chances at the other end so the result was a fair reflection of the game (unfortunately).

Dillon and Justin were both still handicapped by the same afflictions as the week before, and the team especially miss Dillon's usual drive in midfield.

Altrincham Juniors

3 - 5

Callaghan (3), Dunne, Shariff

Altrincham Juniors are the old Hale Barns club, renamed and (we are told) now linked as a feeder club to Altrincham Town. Last year they were one of the stronger teams we played, so this was expected to prove a stiff test.

All but Callum Griffith were available for our first afternoon kickoff. The first fifteen minutes had a slightly ominous feel, with St.John's struggling to assert themselves and AJ enjoying lots of possession. The home team had a pacy right winger who was causing some problems to  James Chatterton at left back, and the opening goal came to him in due course. However, Stephen S-Leape started dropping back in defence to assist James and that tactic blocked of AJ's most potent threat for the rest of the match.

St.John's had managed a few half chances that had been scuffed, but after going a goal behind started to string passes together and hold onto possession. Louis scored the equaliser from a ball falling loose in the area, and the game started to swing to the away team. A well worked goal from a short corner from James Hughes to Louis followed and Tyler scored the third before half time.

Both Dillon (chest infection) and Justin (sprained wrist) were in poor shape so spent time on the bench. Louis dropped into midfield for Dillon and Tyler covered Justin's role on the right wing.

The second half saw St.John's hold off a strong period of pressure from AJ.  A penalty to the home side saw the score 2-3 for a while before Louis added his third, hit first time from a cross by Sam Harper. Mohamad scored St.John's fifth near the end of the game before AJ scored their third, and St.John's were unlucky not to have added one or two more (including a penalty that was not awarded).

All in all this was a very good team performance and everyone went home full of smiles and looking forward to the next challenge.

The second weekend of the half term break brought another weakned U13 defence to the fore; for this game, both our regular central defenders were unable to play due to illness and invisibility. It proved to be a critical problem and high lighted our inability to play at a high standard without all our "key" players.

In order to cover the absence of Paul and Kadeem, we played the first half with Louis paired at centre back with Caelan. Both players coped well and played their roles well. Naturally they took time to get used to the postional requirements but between them and Chris Mackie (who played one of his best games for the team) in goal they always managed to recover any mistakes. The conceded goal, when it came was the result of a series of poor clearances.

With moving Louis to defence, we were struggling to convert the chances we did create at the other end, so at half time the team was rearranged. Callum moved to centre back with Caelan and Sam to right back. Louis resumed up front with Tyler and then later Mohamed.

Initially the change was succesful, with Louis getting the equaliser soon after the restart. However the team struggled to keep possession, with play bypassing our midfield for large parts of the game. Deans scored after some more St.John's defensive errors and the score remained at 1-2 to the end of the game. Although the home team went very close to scoring on several occasions, it has to be said that Deans too could easily have scored again. In the end St.John's were unlucky not get a point, but certainly didn't deserve three.

4 - 14

This game was arranged as there were no league games due to probable weakened teams at half term. As it happened, the under 13s were without quite a few players, with only 11 players available on the day. Harry Callaghan from the Under 12s played at left back.

As can be seen from the score, the Under 14s proved far too strong overall, although the Under 13s did play very good passing football for most of the game, and proved a handfull to the older team when attacking. The U13 makeshift defence were not able to cope with some strong running and skillful U14 forwards. The lesson learnt was to take the first chance to clear the ball when defending as a second chance was not likely to come.

Confidence is rising as each game goes by, and St.John's enjoyed their best start in any of this seasons games. The first 20 minutes saw the team play excellent football. When in possession they passed and moved smoothly and when defending they closed the opposition down quickly and regained the ball.

The first goal was scored within five minutes by Justin with an excellent header at the back post from a James Hughes corner kick. A few minutes later, Mohamed ran onto a high through ball and after a bit of Harlem Globe-Trotters style work, calmly struck the ball past the keeper into the net. Midway through the half Louis added the third to make the game comfortable, and the rest of the half passed without much incident. St.John's did relax and get a bit too casual, allowing Ashton to score their only goal before half time with a deflected shot.

After the half time break the home team upped their effort again and created numerous chances. Louis scored the fourth and headed over when it was easier to hit the target from one of Justin's many crosses. The fifth goal was almost Louis' hat-trick, but his flicked on header was deflected into the goal by a defender and adjudged an own goal by the referee.

The last goal of the match was definitely the pick, it being Callum Griffith's first for the team. He met a James Hughes corner from the right perfectly and sent a bullet header flying past the keeper.

Old Stretfordians

Won

3 - 0

Callaghan (3)

After a stuttering performance seven days earlier, the Under 13s needed to find an extra gear or two to beat Old Stretfordians. The result in the league a few weeks before had favoured OS but St.John's had come away from that game convinced they had not shown their true ability. This was a welcome opportunity to set the record straight!!

Both teams were now familiar with the opposition and it showed. The first half was as even as any game we have played, with both attacks creating chances that both defences managed to repel. From the corner and shots count, St.John's had slightly the better half, but not by much.

The OS tall keeper was causing our attack some problems, holding both shots and crosses. When the opening goal did come, it was after he had made a mistake. Following a sustained period pressure, with Justin causing mayhem down our right wing, the keeper mishandled a cross which deflected into Louis' path. He stabbed the ball home with some relief, as the match was two thirds through and extra time  and penalties loomed in the mind.

Once OS had to chase the game, space opened up for the home team and they started to look more commanding. Louis' second was slightly fortunate, his shot from the top of the penalty area taking a big deflection from inside the left hand to inside the right hand post. His hat-trick came from being put one on one with the keeper, who he neatly chipped. Not a bad way to celebrate your birthday!

This was a big team effort from St.John's, with everyone putting in worthwhile performances. The whole defence raised their game, and three good saves from Chris kept OS at bay for our first competitive clean sheet this season.

Wilmslow Sports

2 - 6

Callaghan (2), Schall, Dunne, Hughes, Mohamed

After two losses, this felt like a must win game. Wilmslows poor record leading up to the game gave cause for optimism, and at the start of the match, played on a perfect autumn morning, the opposition only fielded ten men. For St.John's, Stephen and James Chatterton were missing on family duty, so the start of the game saw Louis back at left mid and Mohamed start for the first time.

However, although St.John's never looked uncomfortable, they did not dominate the game as expected. Perhaps the players had picked up on the "easy pickings" tag and were too complacent. WS were very impressive for a team of ten, and competed well in all areas, never giving St.Johns much time on the ball.

The opening goal came from Louis. He made good progress to the left hand byline and crossed. The ball went clean over the keeper straight into the top right corner of the net. Before and after this St.John's had fashioned several good chances and could have been three or four goals clear. Instead WS equalised to level the game at half time. St.John's were hampered by Justin having to leave the field following a kick to the ankle from behind. He came back on when WS equalised.

Straight talking and a change to 4-3-3 at half time saw Louis score immediately after the restart. A third goal from Tyler made the game look safe until a minor lapse in defence and a well taken finish from WS made the score 2-3.

The score stayed this way for most of the second half, until the ten men of WS tired and St.Johns scored three times through Justin (another cross), James Hughes (25 yard pile driver) and Mohamed (first club goal).

The score flattered St.Johns and was unkind to the home team.

This was a game that St.John's should have won. Old Stretfordians were promoted last season and so we expected a good team. However plenty of good play by the home team was undone by one or two instances of poor play and the points went to the Stretford team.

The first half was even, with both teams looking capable of scoring. St.John's defence took a long time getting to grips with the oppostion runners, and before they had worked out who should pick up who, OS had caused enough problems to equalise Louis' early opener.

St. John's went ahead with a goal from Stephen, only for OS to score twice and take the lead.

Louis' second equalised the scores again so that at half time the score was 3 - 3.

The second half was very even. An unfortunate error from Chris Mackie saw a long range speculative shot bobble over the line, and shortly after the whole St.John's defence committed a series of blunders to gift a fifth to the visitors.

James Hughes struck one of his now trade mark free kicks to bring hope with five minutes to play, but further goals eluded St.Johns.

Even though Louis Callaghan was missing on a family jolly in the lake district, the feeling was that the team had improved so that they no longer relied on one or two players to win games. If that is true this result did not prove it.

Although Steven and Tyler got three goals between them, they came too late. An injury to Kadeem and lack of adequate cover left the defence in disarray. Although the score was 0-0 at half time, 15 minutes later we had conceded too many too have a chance of rescuing the situation.
